What does Queer bring to the table that wasn’t covered by Lesbian, gay or bi? I mean, even Lesbian isn't really needed. Why not just Gay and bisexual? Simplicity people. Come on.

Are we really having a go at people being inclusive of people who total less than 1% of the population over pedantry?

The reason why people use LGBTQ is because if you just talked about one of them people would give even less of a shit about their day to day issues than they already do.

One of my first tasks at my job was livestreaming a press conference where a paikistani transgender woman frequented at a bar (not brothel) where 'deviants' as you say might hang out. They were rounded up by police, gangraped by police in prison and then had their head shaved.

There are a billion stories better, worse or somewhere inbetween across the planet. That's why they band together.

I'm not really into any of this stuff at all, but from my limited observations, a lot of Ls Gs and Bs seem to harbour quite a lot of mostly unspoken resentment towards Ts, and vice versa - I'm not sure why, really. Perhaps it's because Ls Gs and Bs feel that their still very shaky conversation with the mainstream has been drowned out by the very very loud T-related arguments, while Ts no doubt feel resentful that Ls Gs and Bs (mainly Ls and Gs) have been acknowledged by the mainstream in a way that they haven't been.

It's not a sustainable discourse because the two are very different things indeed. I guess the reason they are lumped together is that most straight people don't understand any of it so it's convenient to drape it all under the rainbow and trot out some platitudes a couple of times a year.

I can see that but in the west as it all inches very slowly (like an arctic glacier) towards the open, I'm pretty sure it will fragment.

I think judging the movement from that sort of birdseye view does make modern discourse seem very dumb but you and I grew up in a world where Eddie Izzard's sexuality was wild. That it's even happening at all in a mainstream contest is a massive progression. Chemical castration to bitching about him/her in 50 years is a great thing.

We've already done the inclusive thing by including 'other' as a gender option and mx as a title. Not that there isn't a long way to go, obviously. It's not pedantic to wonder why a gender is listed alongside sexualities if gender and sexuality are unrelated. Why don't we just chuck Vegans, the depressed and the disabled in there if we jut want to ring fence anyone that falls outside of Bamsters comfort bubble.

Dolls come in white and white only...

Kmart Australia has launched, ‘Baby Charlie with Down Syndrome’ dolls on their website.

The company reached out to Down Syndrome Australia to ensure the creation process was done respectfully.

Down Syndrome Australia is excited with the launch and says "We are pleased that Kmart has taken steps to widen the diversity in its toy range with a number of new fashion dolls and baby dolls with disabilities."

The new collection also features a doll in a wheelchair and another who is vision impaired.

I read this off another forum

From what i have gathered so far, the man shot dead George Nkencho seemed to be an African migrant, he is alleged to have essentially gone on a rampage before being shot dead.. his behaviour leading up to his dead is as follows..

Beat his girlfriend severely, allegedly with a hammer.

Left home, went to a store and beat the gay guy working there, apparently kicking his teeth out.

Slashed some other person across the face with a knife.

Led the police on a chase, whilst holding a machete.

Would not listen to demands to drop his weapon for apparently over an hour.

Got tazed and maced, didn't work.

Lunged at the police, got shot 3 times and died.

Now black activists on Twitter are calling for attacks on white Irish people, and are proclaiming that they will outbreed the whites in Ireland. The police on scene during the shooting have been doxxed and the token negro politicians are kvetching about systemic racism in Ireland.. Roving gangs of African migrants are running around attacking whites in Dublin and Twitter is removing any video showing the whites being attacked.

Worst of all in it has been the media and the politicians who are either left mentalists or afraid of their shite to get tarred as a racist. This was bad enough as she’s a former TD, though from an extremely left party.

This is even worse as she’s the current minister for justice. Nothing to say on any of it except below. When RTÉ reported on it on the national news they mentioned peaceful protests and interviewed some bint that said George (who had just beaten a shop worker to hospital and has previous for beating his Mrs with a hammer) “wouldn’t hurt a fly”. The whole thing is going to collapse in on itself one of these days.

Someone messing up an answer on The Chaser is apparently news.

Asked which classic Disney animation centres on cats in Paris, Esnart answered 'Aristocrats'.

Unfortunately, host Bradley Walsh was unable to accept that as the correct answer, which is, of course, The Aristocats. The stumble cost Esnart a vital couple of seconds, which ultimately resulted in her losing out on a massive Ł50k cash prize. Considering that Esnart clearly knew the answer, those watching at home couldn't believe she was penalised for her mispronunciation.

Wrong answer. Complain to Bradley Walsh all you want, though.

I liked the bit about disrespect to authorities. Didn't realise being disrespectful was illegal, but the yanks have something called 'contempt of cop' which allows them to arrest people if they're disrespectful to a cop. Or, shoot them if they're an ethnic minority.

Relevant write up on Australia Day meaning fuck all in the grand scheme of things.

I come from a pretty typical white-bread family in typical suburban Australia. In fact the specific place I grew up was Ipswich, Queensland. It’s the home of Pauline Hanson’s infamous fish ‘n’ chip shop. Her kids even went to my high school for a bit. So that’s my where I’m coming from… and I have literally no memories of Australia Day.

I have fond memories of Christmases with the family, Easter nights spent leaving out carrot sticks for the Easter Bunny, and solemn mornings listening to the last post on ANZAC Day. I have memories of observing a minute silence on November 11, and ringing in the new year at midnight on December 31. But I don’t have one single childhood memory of celebrating Australia Day.

Until my 20s I don’t even think I could have told you what day it was on, and I certainly couldn’t have told you what the significance of January 26 was. Was it the day Captain Cook first arrived? The First Fleet? Federation? Shane Warnes’s birthday? I had no idea and neither did anyone else. Australia Day, for white Australians, was just not really a thing.

In short, it's confusing.

Great Britain is an island. Britain is a nation. The UK is a state.

The confusion comes from the misguided idea that one can only be part of one nation, because in a lot of the world there is no such doubling up. I consider myself both English and British. Some people in Eng/Sco/Wal/NI would reject Britishness, whereas others would feel British but not English/Scots etc (I suspect many ethnic minorities with colonial heritage might feel this way).

Presumably many in the crown dependencies consider themselves British but are evidently not English, Scottish or Welsh.

Northern Ireland obviously adds in a further layer of complexity with Ireland being introduced as a third nation you could be part of. I'm sure there are people who consider themselves British and Irish (and Northern Irish), and I don't see what the problem with that would be.

I think also in these days of hard categorisation, nobody understands the difference between a nation and a state. The Irish nation and the Irish state are two very different things.

This post was brought to you by the first year of my BA in politics.

I'd probably consider myself all three of those.

I personally think multiple identities is a good thing, where possible, as it gives you more perspectives on the world. Most of the violence that goes on is people who only have one rigid identity trying to tell other people that they have to be like them, too.

Many nowadays seem unable to divorce nation/region from state, which is where some of the more fervent FBPE type people come a cropper, as they can't imagine being European without also being subject to its embodiment in the EU political organisation. Similarly, Little Englander mentality is idiots trying to tell people that they aren't allowed to feel European as well as British/English, which of course they very well are.

I disagree with much of that. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a nation state, the constituent parts of which are Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a nation state, the nations of which are England and Scotland. England is a nation comprising England and Wales, which, in spite of fictions contained in various local government acts, has not been a nation state for centuries (and realistically never was). Northern Ireland is a complicating factor because, whilst Ireland was a nation within the then nation state, and now have their own nation state, our people over there did not constitute a nation but do now due to a century of quasi-solidarity.

Nations are primarily based in ethnicity, which is why governments stress Britishness, why the SNP very deliberately refer to their broader grievance constituency as 'the people of Scotland', and why Northern Ireland.

I am English and British. I am English because that is my nationality, rooted as it is in my English ethnicity, and British because I am a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This is why ethnic minorities identify with 'Britishness'. You cannot be English-Indian, only British-Indian, because India - or whatever sub-section of it - is their nation. If I had kids with a saucy doctor with a big nose called Priya, they would be British owing to them falling between two stools and landing on their passport. Maybe if she died in childbirth and, in my distress, I swore them off curry for life, their English identity would be strong enough to pull them into our orbit; but I don't know.

EU to hit Australia with a border tax on carbon emissions

Don't virtually all of Australia's exports to Europe (wine? RM Williams Hats?) come to the UK? I'm sure there was some stat about how the common tariff was collected and most of it was collected by the UK, particularly with regards to antipodean goods.

niko_cee

Apparently gold is the big one (well, it was in 2016) and 98.8% of that comes to the UK, and 50.1% of all Australian exports [to the EU] in that year were to the UK.

Coal, well, yeah, you can see how that might be subject to 'carbon taxes'.

Meanwhile the UK only accounted for 14% of EU exports to Australia and the balance of trade is in Australia's favour. :happycry:

Over the years, scientists have tried to calculate how many hippos are living in Colombia's waterways, with estimates ranging from 80 to 120 animals. "It is the biggest hippo herd outside Africa, which is their native region," veterinarian and conservationist Carlos Valderrama told the BBC.

Disappointed to learn it wasn't the same one.

More bad and unnecessary science here.

But such procedures are far from simple - or cheap - and Carlos Valderrama has experience of this. In 2009, he performed a castration of a male "cocaine hippo" as part of an experiment to study options to control the growing population.

Man with castration fetish gets to carry out procedure in the name of science.
