The economics of it were questionable at thirty billion, which was why the argument shifted to capacity; but that doesn't necessitate that route at that speed. You could bring the Great Central Main Line back for a few billion and then let local councils waste the rest. If we still have an economy left anyway.

The country has only had two decision-making PMs in the last 50 years (Thatcher and Blair), the rest just drift along clinging to power and let fingers go into pies, Boris is no different, and I don't see Keir being any different either.

To cancel HS2 you'd need a Thatcher figure to storm into the room and shout fuck off. Not going to happen with the amount of contracts etc that will be tied up in it and the number of people it would upset.

Boydy
14-10-2020, 03:25 PM
How much would it cost to build some sort of metro system in a city? I feel like you could probably build them in a good few major British cities for the price of HS2.

Large scale rail project over budget and massively late? Sounds about par for the course, I wonder if you adjusted the APT/Intercity fiasco for inflation if it would be better or worse than this. How did a country that ruled 1/3rd of the world become so awful at infrastructure?

Privatisation, cost cutting etc.

I had to study if for a course on Rail Operations Management (lol) and essentially the problem in the UK is that every so often a big project is green lit, but when it finishes the specialists needed are allowed to retire or drift off elsewhere and there is such a gap that when the next project happens there has been a massive skills drain. Where in Germany for instance their rail infrastructure upgrade projects are completely mapped out for decades ensuring they have a well skilled workforce on hand at all times. The only rail project delivered on time in my rail career was the Ordsall Chord junction in Manchester and that has proved to be a white elephant.

Lewis

The Germans have spent ten years too many building an airport that has gone five times over its budget, and their armed forces don't work. Plus they pollute like fuck and all of their car companies are bent, so let's not get too wrapped up with that lot.

Lofty
16-10-2020, 10:26 PM
It's not really the Germany are brilliant lobby more just an example of how the continental rail system works better than the UK one, for a myriad of reasons. Essentially boiling down to 'lol privatisation'

Lewis
16-10-2020, 11:00 PM
Private enterprise built the railways, and it was sorting them out after the First World War. It's all been bollocks since the government stepped in.

Anyway, I'm not sure how privatisation/cost-cutting explains large infrastructure projects running away with themselves when it happens across every sector and has been for decades, through the communist years and since. I think half the time they just fuck the initial sums up, whether deliberately to establish a foothold from which to plead sunk costs or just because planning the finance for something ten years away is ridiculous by definition. The Olympics for example went four times over budget, which sounds bad, but could it ever really have been done on anything like its initial budget? I think the last significant national project we did on time and on budget were the Resolution class submarines, which a bit of a crash programme and essential, so the cost was the cost and that was it.

For what it's worth, it was exactly the same with the UK water industry when I worked there a few years back. I think the general public would be shocked at how many assets/processes are broken down and there is no investment to fix them - all the while the owners are paying huge dividends to overseas pension fund owners.
And then everyone is shocked when untreated waste spills into the rivers, OFWAT issues another record breaking fine, further reducing investment. And so it goes on.

Kikó

Spikey M
28-10-2020, 10:36 AM
Third world in this respect would be countries that already endure famine, flooding, drought, forest fires. Even with money, I'm not sure how the likes of Australia are hoping to deal with it. The gaff is already on fire for 3 months of the year.

Plus, as Keeks says, it's going to shaft eco systems. The seas are already emptying, reefs dying off and forests are pretty much all plantations now.

Jimmy Floyd
28-10-2020, 11:01 AM
Third World is a Cold War era term, the Second World being the communists and the First World (and their problems) being the West.

It got replaced by the time I was at school with 'developing countries', not sure what the current terminology is. SOAS used to like 'the global south' in my degree but that's SOAS for you.

Basil Zempilas, who was elected to office earlier this month, told listeners of the breakfast show he co-hosts on 6PR it was "wrong" for someone to identify as a different gender to their physical anatomy.

"If you've got a penis mate, you're a bloke," he said yesterday morning.

"If you've got a vagina, you're a woman. Game over."

Mr Zempilas then laughed off a suggestion by co-host Steve Mills that he would likely come into contact with transgender people in his role as Lord Mayor.

Maybe they've changed it since I had much of it, other than a can my mate got me when we were discussing it we're talking the better part of 15 years since I had it when I was in India and had it a bunch of times but regardless of how refrigerated it was it always seemed a bit more viscous and sickly even compared to other sugary, fizzy caffeine-y things. Definitely used to have a slightly weird odour as well because I remember being in a restaurant or something there, my dad had ordered me a Coke and we could both tell without even tasting it that it was a glass of Thums Up rather than the usual Coke or Pepsi. "Odorous" isn't a quality I was looking for in a soft drink.

A Brisbane City councillor said she was told to catch a cab to work after having a planned caesarean-section (c-section) birth early next year in response to her request to attend meetings online.

'It doesn't make us special'

An LNP councillor, Fiona Cunningham, is also expecting a baby in the new year, but said she "didn't share" Cr Cook's concerns and is opting to take leave after giving birth.

"I'm also having a caesarean — it doesn't make us special — thousands of women do this every day," Cr Cunningham said.

"Hybrid meetings would not work for me … I'm taking that time to spend with my baby."

Cr Cunningham said Cr Cook was not being "locked out" of any political process.

"She can listen in, she also has other colleagues in the chamber who can represent her views and who can represent her constituents," she said.

"This is not locking her out … and it's ridiculous to say that it is."

Then I get through it and I see the central plank of the article is a tweet with no replies, 27 retweets and 100 likes. That's not sparking outrage, it's barely a conversation.

Where's the article about the outrage sparked by my tweet that's just a picture of Tom Cruises ass in the movie Valkyrie if this is the standard?

Couldn't they have just picked some random mong for a better kick-off than that?

It constantly amazes me how bad the people who are paid to kick a ball 3 times a game are at kicking a ball.

I'm not familiar with the oeuvre of the division/standard of that, but presumably that was intended as some sort of bobble kick rather than being a really shit attempt at a touchback.

Looked a bit Diana Ross to me.

That kick could set women's sport back about 50 years. Even I feel like giving Emmeline Pankhurst a slap for starting the movement that allowed that to happen.

It looked intended.

I imagine she either didn't have the leg to kick it deep enough for a touchback and/or the kick returner is dangerous so they didn't want him to advance the ball.

Is there a particular skill to kicking an American football? Because it looks like the easiest money in sport.

The main two things I’d imagine are starting the run up before the ball is there and how short a leash you’re on. That said, in a country that size you’d wonder how they can’t find 32 that are close to perfect.

None of their other sports require any long-kicking skill pretty much at all, as far as I can see, so no one would have learned it from birth like we do in countries with football, rugby and gaelic football etc.

You kick it differently from a regular football (which is also why they'd have told her to do that) and, with field goals at least, there are many stages to it and if one of those stages goes wrong (e.g. even the holder putting it down wrongly) then the kick will fuck up.

On Saturday, Ta Nam Chien, chairman of the Vietnamese capital's Ba Dinh District, divulged that the bomb was found at 15 Cua Bac Street in Truc Bach Ward.

“Due to its excessive mass, the bomb will be left to the discretion of the Ministry of National Defense," Chien told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper
