It's mental that he did it and it's even more mental that he's thought it wise to tell a reporter about it, but the reaction - as expected- is ridiculous. Medium security psychiatric hospital.

'Medium Security' just instinctively sounds wrong for someone who offed their kids. My dad worked in a mental health facility with a 'Low Security' ward for a few years and some of the people he mentioned being held under those conditions sounded like they should have been treated like Garland Green.

That said, a few years ago in the psychiatric care unit of that same hospital a woman with a fairly extensive history of suicide attempts did herself in with a fucking scarf she won in a game of bingo organised by the nurses, so maybe that place just ought to be shut down.

Spikey M

The argument they have is that Apu is a stereotype.

Which he is.

As is - every - fucking - character. Why Apu is the issue and not BumbleBee Man or Cleetus or..., who knows?

John
13-02-2019, 03:20 PM
The reason Apu is the issue is that Hari Kondabolu did a piece on how growing up the primary way people would take the piss out of him was doing the Apu voice at him. The character itself is actually pretty nuanced, the only stereotypical aspects are the voice and the corner shop, and were he voiced by an actual Indian man I don't think anyone would care. Picture Hank Azaria doing the voice though and you begin to see why it might make people uncomfortable.

SincereTheRebel
13-02-2019, 03:52 PM
Apu being voiced by someone who looks like Hank, I understand the backlash. But it is still acting at the end of the day by displaying your talents.

Ian
13-02-2019, 04:27 PM
Azaria revealed that he draws inspiration from an Indian shopkeeper who committed the heinous crime of.... asking him not to drink a drink he hadn't actually paid for.

Not that that makes any difference to whether the character is a problem or not, just that it makes Azaria look like an arse.

Was there another character from the subcontinent on American tv in the 80’s - 90’s? I can barely think of a Hispanic or Asian character. There was Ponch from CHiPs, Jimmy Smitts, and who else? I seem to remember some detective on Miami Vice with a Japanese backstory who was played by James Edward Olmos or something. It is odd, and completely unsurprising, that a white guy impersonating an Indian guy would have been it. Which is the actual point they are making.

From the outline reports on the beeb this does sound like an all time wtf defence.

Maybe not quite the Huntley 'they just died in the bath' effort, but close and maybe better in terms of mad conspiracy. It'll probably turn out to be true in 30 years.

No one really advises a defendant as to plea. Technically, you have to take them at their word and if they say they didn't do it, you go with it. You only advise a guilty plea if they actually full on say they did it, or recuse yourself when they don't.

No, the idea of a jury of your peers does not exist over here unlike the US. I believe the Judge is more important in the UK as well?

In a British legal system, jurors are selected at random from the populace. However, in America, juries are selected from a cross-section of society. American juries are meant to represent a similar background to the defendant, hence the phrase “a jury of your peers”. The UK Ministry of Justice defends the practise as “fair, independent, and democratic”. Additionally, unlike in America, British jurors are not cross-examined by the attorneys to determine the jurors’ suitability, only being dismissed if there is some extraordinary circumstance that would render them incapable of an unbiased decision. In most American courts, attorneys may strike jurors that may have a bias, with some using it as an ability to craft a jury that will render a more desirable verdict.

A hundred people received letters asking them to show up. You go up and ask for exemption if you have a good reason, and then fifteen are drawn from a hat from whoever is left.

Literally haven't seen a single mention of it and it doesn't seem to be trending anywhere? I think you need to tone down what you consider 'outrage' and might just be, ' a group of people talking about something on social media'

You have tailored trends on, that's just stories you've read recently/people you follow fed into an AI algorithm.

Perhaps, I've no idea, but it indicates that it's a thing anyway.

That's not what trending is.

PS. People who use Twitter Moments  I thought that was for the 6 nans that couldn't work out how to use Twitter.

It's a shitty news site run by twitter made to get more people to write tweets. Of course they're saying something is happening on Twitter about it. Use their search functions, you can't even find an angry person who turns up in 'top'.

Even the thing that's supposed to be sensationalist uses the word 'mixed'.

I'm not having my twittering judged by a man that gets banned for getting huffy at celebrities. Good day.
