I think with straws it was that there should be no reason for them to be a problem, given that they either end up in a landfill or getting incinerated. Now, you could say that we shouldn't be doing that even; but then how much packaging is a waste of time? None of that gets banned, because that would actually involve doing something rather than merely being seen to be doing something.

Spikey M
08-11-2018, 07:33 PM
But paper wastage is the Jade Goody to Plastics Genghis Khan. You want to get rid of both, but if you can't you'd rather have Jade knocking about.

There's an analogy about plastics/Genghis' ability to hang around for longer than paper/Jade in there somewhere too.

I have read a bit about the plastic craze and, as usual, it is just idiots overreacting to nothing. In advanced countries most of that shit gets recycled, or at worst landfilled/incinerated. The whole 'plastic ball in the ocean' thing is due to third world countries without infrastructure to properly deal with trash. So yeah, if you really want to help, donate a truck to Laos or something. A straw ban is as useful as nice thoughts are.

EDIT: Yeah, what Lewis said.

Battenberg milkshakes, chocolate apple pie milkshakes, the works. This was in the early to mid 2000s, so Tony Blair's beady eye was focused on bigger fish like banning smoking (worst thing to happen to this country since the war) and we could sup our laughable £2.80, 600 calorie efforts in peace.

Nowadays there's a campaign group trying to ban any kind of fun, so you can't have any. There's literally one that wants to ban rugby in schools. I mean, fuck off. No one cares if your kid got trampled on. It's called bad luck. Watch that Peter Jackson war film and then whinge about unfairness.

Jimmy Floyd

Like what?

It's a thing that used to keep people together, and its banning drives people apart. Community institutions (mainly pubs, but other things too) have died out because of it. People liked to smoke in rooms with other people. Now they have to do it alone at home, or outside, with their fellow lepers by the fire exit, or stop smoking - and what replaces smoking? Sure, it wasn't good for them, but it helped make life alright. Banning smoking was the worst example of progressive educated people telling the bored working class to fuck right off, without ever having to actually meet them. It was the worst New Labour child of Thatcher's cult of nanny individualism. Oh, great, we're healthier and living longer now, without the smoke! Living an extra 0.7 years, all of it spent wondering what the hell happened to us, with that sickly modern pub smell around us, the combination of testicle sweat, Red Bull mixer and vomit.

And what about all the people who used to be put off going to places because of smoking? Oh, yeah, Zizzi is fucking packed out with them, and their fucking children.

If smoking was going to stop or die out for health reasons, then it should have been left to do so organically, with incentives or whatever, and people would have evolved, pubs would have evolved, society would have found a way in time, as it always does. Legislation just drops the guts out of society overnight. We're all told to be alone, now, live as useful economic entities rather than as human beings with failings, and you wonder why there's so much anger and isolation and why things like Brexit happen. Pig, in a cage, on antibiotics.

The ban actually made things more sociable for me initially. I'd be one that wouldn't rise my head in the pub in case I'd have to listen to someone so I'd always have the phone (or newspaper in the olden days), but having to go out to the smoking areas meant your end up talking to someone. Naturally, with people being twats and all, that died a death too and I just take the phone out when I'm there too but it was a bit of a change for a while. Plus (here anyway) most pubs have smoking areas with seats, heaters, and TV's so you end up just staying in it and going in to get another drink each time (my local has a bar in the smoking area for weekends anyway). Plus it has the added advantage of being able to tell people to fuck off in the summer when they sit out with their snotty little spawns and start faux coughing beside you.

Southwest Airlines has apologised after a member of its staff mocked a five-year-old girl's name.

Traci Redford and her daughter, Abcde (pronounced ab-si-dee), were en route home to El Paso, Texas, from California's John Wayne Airport when the incident occurred.

A gate agent allegedly began laughing and took a photo of the child's boarding pass and posted it online.

Why did they have to apologise?

Some other song got banned on the radio recently. It's some mid-late 80s disco/trance song that was a longtime chart topper but the interlude is a modulated female orgasm which apparently makes it pornographic material so can't be played even after the watershed. I can't find who RT'd it into my timeline though.

the 'winner' of song that listening back to it is incredibly problematic has to be Ja Rule's - Always on Time.

Verse 1) Tells this hypothetical person to drop her restraining order against him because the sex is good or he'll just have to go have sex with someone else.

I know, I got a lot of things I need to explain
But baby you know the name and love is about pain
So, stop the complaints and drop the order restraints
Our sex life's a game so back me down in the paint
'Cause I can't wait no more
'Cause it's about a quarter-past three and shorty's eyein me

Verse 2) Says he drugs women to keep them around, impregnates multiple women and beats them.

I got two or three hoes for every V
And I keep 'em drugged up off that ecstasy
I'm a playground legend like Kirkland Pee-wee
Name a nigga in the league got more game than me
I play hard, there's so many women I fathered
Meet 'em with scars and send 'em home hot and bothered

Verse 3) Just ?

And when I play you play the same way you freak me baby I fuck you crazy
Then I'm gone
Baby don't really want me to get up and leave off that easy
She'll be wakin up wet for sheezy
Remind these bitches to mind they business
Believe me, this pimp game is very religious

Those Ja Rule lyrics are pretty tame by rap standards, why do you say it's the 'winner'? Because of how popular it is?
