View Full Version : Funniest thing on telly

I've just finished Taskmaster season 2 and I can't remember the last time something on telly made me laugh this much.

For the uninitiated, it's a game show type thing featuring five comedians who have to complete tasks which are funny more often than not (e.g. conceal a pineapple on your person, order a pizza without saying specific words).

It's also made me realise I fancy Katherine Ryan quite a lot.

What are some other funny things on television?

Katherine Ryan? I don't see it. Quite funny though.

Never heard of her but this Katherine Ryan person looks like if you just stretched out Taylor Swift.

Yeah Joe Wilkinson is a bit shit. Seasons three looks wank as well (Dave Gorman, Al Murray, Rob Beckett, Sara Pascoe, Paul Chowdhry)

The funniest thing on TV is, and will always be Parks and Recreation. I think Dave is still showing whichever season they bought on a continuous loop.

I didn't watch Parks and Rec as I can't stand Amy Poehler but anything good about it has been absolutely killed to death by mongs quoting it.

Brooklyn 99? Lol. I think it's decent.

John

Not even close. I came to it late so I'd seen all the Ron Swanson memes before I'd seen a single episode but when you see those same jokes properly delivered and in context, they're great.

Amy Poehler is brilliant.

It's Fleabag (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p040trv9/fleabag-episode-1).

Catastrophe is back for another season soonish too, I think. That's up there but since its not actually on at the minute, I won't count it.

Taskmaster is indeed brilliant.

Katherine Ryan is amazing

She did an advert for Sky One pretending to be Beyonce a while back, she looked incredible.

God I fucking hate that bigmouth wench. Used to even enjoy a bit out of 8 Out of 10 Cats Countdown until she appeared on it.
Though Joe Wilkinson's involvement had already shit all over it at that stage really.

Veep? Although The Thick of It was probably funnier. Still Veep is great.

The Office (US) I always thought was far better than Parks and Rec.

I like Parks and Rec but The Office probably edges it slightly, at least for the first few seasons before it begins going downhill.

I would have said it's always sunny, but I got fucking sick of it during the last couple of seasons. Not even bothered to watch the new one past the first few episodes.

Simpsons S2-S7 still untouchable, but I re-watched the entirety of Phoenix Nights the other week for the first time since I was about 16 and I think I like it even more now. The Das Boot fruit machine going off during the wake is possibly my favourite comedy moment of all time.

Shame they had to sully Phoenix Nights with the Max and Paddy spinoff.

This is my favourite bit though:

Silicon Valley was hella good, but they're not doing a good job wrt character development, most of them suck ass now and aren't funny.

It went downhill when they decided to make Winston into a cartoon character.

Channel 4 have been sowing loads of Simpsons S5 lately. So good.

The problem with Silicon Valley's last season is that the plot often made no sense. The ways in which the guys get screwed over are so contrived.

I haven't seen the trailer but I'm going to say yes.

It reminded me of Catastrophe so if you liked it, you'll probably like it. And if you haven't seen Catastrophe, you should.

Yeah, I liked Catastrophe, so perhaps I'll watch a full episode of Fleabag and judge it on that, rather than the trailer.

I agree with that. I do think it's a really great show and one of the funniest things on television at the minute, but the weekly cycle of them seemingly making some headway only to inadvertently fuck themselves over in some new and ridiculous way does get a bit tedious.

Vice Principals is my weekly go-to comedy at the minute. I think the first season is nearly done now though, there's a couple of episodes left maybe.

I enjoyed the first episode of that but very quickly went right off it. I just can't get past the Danny McBride character, who should be getting the shit kicked out of him about six times an episode. Obviously it's supposed to be about a pair of pricks, but he's too obnoxious with too little pushback and to too little comic effect for my liking.

Will give this Taskmaster a look.Flew through season one of Taskmaster and it was genuinely hilarious in places. Two episodes into season two and I'm not enjoying it as much because I hate that tall nonce, and Joe Wilkinson isn't funny. Tim From the first season had that kinda schtick nailed on, whereas Joe Wilkinson is annoying. Doc Brown's alright and normally I like Jon Richardson but he's not been very good so far. I'm hoping season two gets better and I already have season three ready to watch, but season one was hilarious.

Bob's Burgers at it's peak is as good as any other animated series that's come out. And it's amazing that it just keeps maintaining that quality. It's hard to believe it's seven seasons in, and barely dipped.

In terms of things that are airing right at this moment, I'd say that Veep edges out Brooklyn Nine-Nine (mostly because the quality of the latter has dipped slightly in the last season and a half). However, that's not really a criticism of B99, which still manages to get a solid half dozen laugh-out-loud moments even in the worst episodes. It's a relative thing.

All time? Arrested Development and Black Books.

Might try to watch this. Is series 1 as good? Or do you need to get through a series before it hits top form?

+1 for Katherine Ryan

Parks and Rec is my favourite of the past few years, with honourable mention to Brooklyn nine-nine, which I really wanted to hate, People Just Do Nothing and the myriad of animated post-Archer American things on Netflix.

I can't remember the last (new) tv show that I found funny. The mrs likes The Big Bang Theory and it's alright in a 'well, if there's nothing else on' way, but it's not exactly funny.

I've heard good things about 'Always sunny...' but not actually seen it yet.

I think it's good. It changed slightly in style after season one, but the first season is short enough that you can stick it out. And there's some gold there, too.
