Saturday

La Liga's back as well. Some EFL stuff is happening as well as FNF (lol) making a debut with Rachel Riley () hosting alongside Jeff Sterling with an hour and a half buildup for some reason :cab: Also the hotly anticipated rematch for the Germans and the Brazilians in the gold medal final in case you lot were getting excited over that on the red button...woo.

I bet Martin Tyler has spent every waking moment since he signed thinking of what to say if Paulp Ogba scores.

Just realised I missed another edition of Tottenham 1-1 Everton last weekend.

When is manchstchstderbeh? Everyone will wet themselves about that, even though not even 'Pep' has made City remotely interesting.

From what I've read, the aim of "FNF" is adding more banter to Sky ...

*Marge Simpson noise*

Why don't they just add more sport?

Jimmy Floyd

They should just bring back FanZone, PlayerCam (stick it on Willy Caballero and watch the chins stroke themselves) and Andy Gray.

I know it was mentioned in jest but Fan Zone was sensational. It was the reason I watched every game in Sky in ~2001.

Jimmy Floyd
19-08-2016, 12:44 PM
It was great, and the only reason you wouldn't continue to have it is that management require the corporate message to be under more control. See also why you can't just mute the commentary and have crowd noise.

bruhnaldo
19-08-2016, 01:10 PM
can't just mute the commentary and have crowd noise.

on NBC over here, if you stream the match from laptop they have a "TACTICAL CAM" which is basically just a wider camera that shows more of the field than the standard TV view.

long story short, it's completely free of commentary and my GOD is it glorious.

Mind you, I generally don't go this route because I'm too lazy to hook my laptop up for every match (especially when they're at 7 or 10 in the morning on a weekend) but ya.

Baz
19-08-2016, 01:28 PM
Sky had Tactical Cam for a bit didn't they? Just seemed more zoomed out, from what I remember. (May even still have it but I don't pay for Sky Sports anymore.)

Turning the commentary off on the rugby is great though. You can hear the ref's mic too.

bruhnaldo
19-08-2016, 01:36 PM
Ya I mean I doubt NBC invented it but it's pretty glorious.

I'll never understand for all of the "CLOSER TO THE GAME IMPROVEMENTS" they make over the years they never think giving people an option to just listen to the sounds of the game would be one of their biggest hits.

Sorry for being all forriner here but who's Rachel Riley (sounds like a porn star) and what's FNF?

Friday Night Football (last season there were no Friday league games, but you may have seen MNF which, of course, is Monday Night Football. It's where the Carraghed/Neville bromance blossomed before Rattigan went for a long holiday in Spain.)

And Rachel Riley is the co-presenter of Countdown. She's a very attractive youn lady and a MASSIVE United fan. She'll be ace on FNF, no doubt.

FWIW she's worth Google imaging. No doubt you'll come across a gif of her drawing a cock on a weird sequin dress she once wore on "8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown," too.

Jimmy Floyd
19-08-2016, 02:17 PM
Rachel Riley is a TV presenter who used to be on an afternoon game show called 'Countdown', in which her role was to put letters on a board and do maths. At a guess, I would say she is in the top ten of the most masturbated over people by the UK's unemployed population.

I was genuinely just thinking that, assuming we snore this one out, this is going to be two boring wins in a row and I didn't realise how much I'd fucking missed it. Very early days obviously but Moyes and Louis didn't put this shit together. Still room for a Fallaini or Bailly red card or YOU COULDN'T WRITE IT (P)ogba own goal to spice things up, of course.

That sofa set-up looked horrific. I imagine the banter levels were through the roof. What was that Dutch twat up to for the penalty? Must have stuck a bet on at half time. Southampton are going to finally execute their much anticipated collapse into shitness after selling enough of their good players. All it took was to put a Frenchman at the helm. Who is he anyway?

Burnley away always seems like a perennial no-pointer, but I think, other than some Traore related madness, it's always been a fairly solid fixture. So Ings multi-OG today, I guess. 3 o'clock Saturday kick-off though. Not too shabby.

Hopefully Brighton pick up where Newcastle left off and continue to stomp Reading.

He keeps a Wigan shirt on under his United one to remind himself he's not always been rubbish. It's working, despite ending up at right-back. The scheduled half-time webinars with Paul Scharner will ease that pain in no time.

Feel like Stoke are the most pointless team in the league now. Before they had the big lads and the long throw to match their shit ground and angry fans. Now the fans fury is muted and the team is just dull.

Liverpool had 81% of possession and 26 shots - but only tested Clarets keeper Tom Heaton with efforts from distance. The 19% of possession that the Clarets had is the lowest total by a winning side in the Premier League since Opta began recording the statistic in the 2003-04 season.

This made me lose my shit for a minute. I mean Wijnaldum did his standard disappearing act, but I was at least aware that he was there. Genuinely couldn't remember one Mane touch of the ball in the whole game. Turns out he wasn't even in the squad.

On a serious note though, as some of you will know I was really optimistic after last season. From the January window closing to the end of the season we were 10th, similar points to Chelsea and Man City, and very much deserved to survive based on that.

And from that final home game we've lost Yedlin, Kaboul, M'Vila and Kone. Kirchoff, Cattermole and Borini are injured and fuck knows what's happened to Khazri. These key players have been replaced by the likes of Love, McNair, Djilobodji, Gooch and Watmore. Some of these may turn out okay of course, but it's not enough at the moment.

To be fair, this time last year we'd signed Mitrovic, Wijnaldum, Thauvin and Mbemba. So.. y'know ... It's a shame David didn't come back from abroad with an enhanced reputation. Like how it did Steve a world of ... good.

Reg

He is a beast. One of the best midfielders to watch. I like that 'complete midfielders' are making a bit of a comeback.

PS Were Roma playing crap before the sendings off?

We're thrashing Oxford with our second/third eleven. Three who basically nobody's seen play.

Vim
23-08-2016, 10:09 PM
Roma were playing meh, down 1-0 but still in the game. Dzeko is absolutely dreadful.

Both tackles were straight reds and should be 3 or 4 game bans, very dangerous challenges. The mental state of Roma is really what's missing, on paper they have one of the strongest squads in Italy and certainly good enough to be in the CL group stage. I suppose when De Rossi is your captain, this is what happens: two red cards and a mental breakdown.

Reg
23-08-2016, 10:15 PM
I thought if Nainggolan went this would be the year they slip out of the top three. Still could be, no idea how good Napoli or Inter will be this year. Who do you reckon for top three, Vim?

Vim
23-08-2016, 10:32 PM
Look, it's hard to predict. After watching the first leg and the game vs Udinese, I had Roma pegged as the main challengers to Juve. Today showed that they lack mental strength. Not to mention they're stuck in the transfer market now since they will not be getting the cash from the Champions League TV deal, I believe Juve and Napoli will be getting an extra €20M each from the group stage TV money.

Inter is an unknown, they have some good players but their manager did not get to do pre-season with the team and they also have some mentally dodgy players. Napoli remain a decent team even without Higuain, but they'll need to somehow come up with an extra 36 goals between them to mitigate the loss of The Fat One. I can't see that happening.

Let's not even mention Milan.

So top three... Juve's first XI, Juve's second XI and Sassuolo (which is technically Juve's third XI).

Reg
23-08-2016, 10:41 PM
:D

My wild guesses...

I'll plunge for Inter to make the top three, partly because I've just seen they've signed Candreva. Along with Banega that could improve them a fair bit. De Boer in Italy is an interesting one.

Napoli to finish 5th or something because a Dutch league striker going to Serie A is bound to end badly.

1 Juve, 2 Inter, 3 Roma.

Vim
23-08-2016, 11:06 PM
Candreva can be good, but De Boer played him at wing-back in his first match. Ridiculous stuff. Comes in, new team who's always played 4 at the back, he's always played 4 at the back at Ajax and first match he goes for a 3-4-1-2. Dutch people are all mental cases.

Two of Roma, Inter and Napoli should fill the top three but each of them has very clear flaws. I do not like takign for granted that Juve will win the league, but surely we've got to win this one.

Lewis
23-08-2016, 11:10 PM
If Juventus finish with less than a hundred points they should sack their manager.

25-08-2016, 08:19 AM
Is it deliberately being called the EFL Cup to try and push their wanky 'EFL' brand, or can they just not find a sponsor? If the latter, how the fucking hell can they not find a sponsor in this football-saturated climate with betting companies giving you blowjobs for a twitter mention?

SvN
25-08-2016, 08:21 AM
It will be the former, I reckon. The same reason the Premier League isn't being sponsored any more.

Jimmy Floyd

SvN
25-08-2016, 08:33 AM
Actually, I think you're right. This article (http://www.efl.com/news/article/2015/the-football-league-outlines-sponsorship-plans-2471042.aspx) from 2015 on the "EFL" website says:

The Football League and credit card company Capital One have agreed that the 2015/16 season will be the fourth and final year of Capital One’s title sponsorship of the League Cup – The Football League’s showpiece cup competition for all 92 clubs from The Football League and Premier League. The Football League will be seeking a new title sponsor for the 2016/17 season onwards.

If they tried and couldn't find one, I can only assume that they're asking for a ridiculous amount of money. As you mentioned, surely some sort of gambling company (whether it's a sportsbook or casino) would be all over it.
