ITV is switching off all seven of its channels for an hour to encourage people to get off their sofas and take part in sport following Team GB's Olympics success.

ITV will stop broadcasting from 09:30 on 27 August as part of the I Am Team GB campaign.

The move, organised with the National Lottery, will also see thousands of sports clubs open to let people try new sports for free.

ITV would usually show Murder, She Wrote at the time of the blackout, with the Coronation Street omnibus on ITV2.

Yeah I'm sure people are going to be running down to local sports clubs at half past nine on the Saturday of a bank holiday weekend because ITV aren't broadcasting.

Sports clubs offering free entry is a good idea. Now is the time to capitalize with interest being peaked.

The general response is:

Pity it isn't permanent

And

I'll just change the channel.

Watching TV at that time anyway.

It is but at 9:30 on a Saturday for an hour? It's not being utilised effectively, you'll only get a small handful of people in.

Get them doing it at a decent time.

This is a really crap version of E4 stopping their endless Big Bang reruns on election day. It's not like they've even covered the Olympics.

They're not aiming for the lazy bastards who are still in bed at 11am.

I like it that you believe I'm awake by 11 <3.

Surely they should be looking at targeting the lazy bastard market though?

I thought, at first, that this story would be about ITV just shutting down for the duration of the Olympics because no one was watching, which would have been more fun.

Angela Lansbury will be seething, if she isn't dead that is.

As if anyone watches ITV.
