View Full Version : If one player took all of his teams penalties in a penalty shootout

If FIFA changed the rules so in a penalty shootout one player was nominated to take them all, what difference do you think it would make? Would it be unfair on the opposition goalkeeper if he came up against someone considered to be really good at penalties (eg Rickie Lambert) or would it be easier for goalkeepers because the taker might overthink where to put each one?

Or maybe the rule change could give the team a choice - either use the whole team and each player can only take one (like the rules are now), OR nominate one man to take them all. If that happened, which choice do you think would be more popular?

Also, which (current or past) players do you think would be good choices as the one man to take them all?

I don't like this idea, partially because I don't like change and partially because I think the current format is better.

Have a different player keep the goals for each kick.

Zlatan has an outstanding penalty record, I believe. He'd be a good shout. Although you'd want someone who you know had converted some under serious pressure, I suppose. You'd think Pirlo would be the right person, but he missed one in the 2005 CL final shootout.

Willy Sagnol hit one of the most emphatic penalties I've ever seen in the 2006 World Cup final. Belted it. It was pressure too - if he missed, Italy won.

Scrap extra time. And instead of 5 penalties, its 11 so everyone must take one if required.

I'd choose this guy:

Penalties are absolutely fine the way they are.

Sorry Baz, that idea is madness.

What about the NHL style penalty where they approach the goal from the halfway line?

Just watch an ANC final involving Ivory Coast, if that's your thing.

They did that before in MLS.

From that vid, it's clear to see that it'll be a roaring success.

I wasn't suggesting they should change the format.

Are you restructuring the Garden Soccer rules Baz?

I don't think the ratio of scored to missed would change much. Apparently roughly 75% of regular penalties go in, and it seems to me about the same in shootouts. I don't think the keeper would gain an advantage if all 5 were from the same taker, as guessing one after another isn't that different from them researching 'Where has Rooney put his 4 penalties in previous games this season?' or whatever.

Thing about shootouts is that they're usually decided by one or two misses.
