Isn't it generally accepted that Benteke's a far better fit for Belgium than Lukaku? Be interesting to see their win percentages with either striker. Actually, it wouldn't, but they always look awful in the big tournaments with Lukaku.
As for Italy, they're a nation of extraordinary pisstakers. Brilliant stuff.
While Lukaku was shit, Wilmots should just be sacked for putting Fellaini up behind the striker. I actually think he wasn't that bad, recycled the ball well and kept his composure a lot better than most people around him, but he offered nothing going forward and should be doing what he did around 20 metres further back, and even there he shouldn't be first choice. Bewildering.

That was the best match yet, are there any downsides to becoming Italian for a couple of weeks?
Fellaini wasn't the problem. He can work fine in a tight tournament game like this if he gets crosses.
The problem is that Belgium's game plan was to give the ball to either de Bruyne or Hazard and hope that they dribble their way into the net. There was no teamwork, none of the midfielders were making runs into the box (Giaccherini got the opener with one of those) instead they just stayed in two fixed banks in midfield hoping for some spark of genius.
But that's part of the problem with Fellaini. Why stick him up there if your gameplan doesn't include wingers who cross into the box?
I'm getting more and more buzzed the more I think about the game. The Italian way
I hate your happiness.

Italy have the best defence and by far the best coach. No reason they can't win it
I hate your happiness.
England played well. :D
Best moment of the game was when Eder just dragged a Belgian down as he was running into an open field. I was clapping while the people in the table near me at the bar said "scheiße Italiener". On another table, three people who were rooting for Belgium the whole game just walked out when Pellè slammed in the 2-0.

The difference between England and Italy is that when you lead 1-0 you dig the fuck in and bang one in on the break (reminded me of the 2006 semi-final, what a game), whereas we sit back and get done by some pale bloke in a bearskin hat sliding in on a toboggan with a half empty bottle of vodka at the back post.
Lewis
13-06-2016, 09:43 PM
The problem is that, whilst Belgium have some good players, they are still Belgium, and they still have the sort of small-time mentality that means they will always attempt to shove as many of their names in as possible with no regard for the system. The most fitting comparison would be with how England used to approach rugby selection, but only about four people will get that, so call it the Gerrard-Lampard Effect.
Mellberg
13-06-2016, 09:44 PM
For fuck sake Jim :D
You can win with names, as long as they don't think of themselves as names within the team. The Belgium coach clearly has no issue with having de Bruyne and Hazard just do whatever they want on the ball with no discipline. Making Hazard the captain instead of one of their few hard fuckers sums it up, really.
Our captain and vice-captains are Buffon, Chiellini and De Rossi. I count two fascists and one butcher.

Italy also have defenders with awareness. There was one long, looping cross to the back post which whatever Italy defender it was calmly took a step back and firmly headed it towards the sideline. Cahill or Smalling would have..... well, let a pale block in a bearskin hat, etc. get to the ball as it went over their head.

When you see central defenders in youth teams - all of them, really, not just the English national team - they are all Rio Ferdinand wannabes sticking their foot on the ball and bursting past the midfield. Nobody just thinking about defending.
Huth and Morgan, the case for the prosecution.

I'm not sure how mistaking yourself in a mirror for someone else leads to you also hearing your own voice on a ten second delay so that you'd mistake it for someone else. I've been in some fucked up places, and I know people who've been in even more fucked up places through drugs, but the closest I've ever heard to that is someone having a conversation with one of the 'Back to School' adverts in Tesco asking the eleven foot picture of a uniformed child how he got to be so big.

Fuck me, I must have missed that at the time.
Why does he find it so difficult to understand the one off the post wasn't over the line but the keeper's gone and deflected it over the line? I've obviously not been exposed to Pearce for a while now so has he gone completely off the rails, or what?
For some reason even with all their talent I don't trust Belgium to do anything in this tournament. They're completely empty shirts.

I don't see anything terrible about fans fighting. Quite the opposite, the guys did well. Keep it up!" Igor Lebedev, nationalist MP and executive member of Russian Football Union
"The lads defended the honour of their country," Russian media quoted MP Igor Lebedev, who is also on the executive committee of the Football Union.
The spokesman for Russia's powerful Investigative Committee went even further.
"A normal man, as he should be, surprises them," tweeted Vladimir Markin, referring to European outrage at Russian hooligans. "They're used to seeing 'men' at gay parades," he concluded.

Obvz the thing about youth development is that you need balance. It is really stupid that technically gifted players were rejected by teams in the past for being too small or whatever, but just as stupid if gritty, intelligent defensive players are being rejected now for being unable to play one-touch passing football.
Is part of the problem (one that will presumably grow) that dickheads see football more and more as an outlet for individual glory rather than a team sport? You even see proper grownups talking about if Ronaldo or Messi will win footballer of the year or whatever, like it fucking matters. Or has it always been a bit like that?
Magic

Indeed he is. We've got an alternative in Sabitzer who's not been better in the national team and Schöpf who is supposedly a big talent, but Koller doesn't really want to rotate. So, yeah. Anything productive coming from the right side of the pitch is pretty much out of the question.

Yep, Hungary have looked good. Lovely finish.
I assume we're all supporting Iceland later?
Hopefully Ronaldo gets injured. Prediction bitch at work has him down as top scorer.

Indeed, too many teams are happy to just sit back on a lead and in England's case fuck up.

Lukaku would have bottled that.
I still think that Hungary have looked technically shite for 95% of the game, but you can't argue with the result or the passion at a moment like that.

Yo I'm up %52.5 at Euro 2016 betting which is an outrageous margin. Maybe all those years of football manager has made me into a savant.
EDIT: Meant to be betting thread, regardless go Iceland
Is that more wank American gambling shit like Vegas odds, or do you just mean you've won seventy five quid from fifty quid of stakes? I'm on a touch over three hundred quid for forty seven of stakes at the moment, and that'll be four hundred from fifty seven if Iceland don't fail me. You're not a savant.

Icelandic naming convention. So Sigurdsson = Sigurd's son, I believe. The suffix for females is -dottir.
