I wouldn't say it's not a big factor, it's less of a factor than other sports but it's still there.

At the end of the day only the Patriots, Ravens, Seahawks, the Saints and the Bucs have won the Superbowl since 2000 for the first time in team history.

Saints and the Buc have yet to be back and only the Ravens and Pats have won it again.

I'm not saying that I don't think that the Jags could make the Superbowl but there is a reason why the bookies have the Ravens at a shorter price and why you'd imagine they're more likely to make it this year than the Jags.

Lockette's retiring, which is far from surprising after that hit he took.

Gronks on the cover of the new Madden game.

Had to be between him or Watt surely(with Beckham being last year).

    Could have been Von.

First time in a good few years that they didn't hold a fan vote though, I guess they really wanted it to be Gronk.

    The curse is dead.

Megatron broke it with Sherman and Beckham also not being afflicted with it.

Not the greatest day for the Bills.

Their first round pick, Shaq Lawson is out indefinitely (they expect him to be out for around the first half of the season) after having shoulder surgery and Sammy Watkins has broken a bone in his foot but should be fine for week 1 unless he has a setback.

And the Ravens have signed Jerraud Powers who is probably going to start, possibly as the nickel corner which is good. We needed better options at corner.

With Sports Authority going bust there's a lot of stuff in the Post at the moment about what's going to happen to the Mile High naming rights, with Sports Authority wanting to sell them to the highest bidder. Seemingly they're not allowed to just do without written consent and yet it looks like it could end up in a situation where a court just says "Nah, that's fine."

I'd rather they just didn't sell them at all but I suppose that's unlikely.

Walter Thurmond has decided to retire at 28.

I'm not really sure why, he was getting offers of around $4m a season to play after he had his first ever good season having been converted to safety by the Eagles.

28 does seem far too young to retire without it being for injuries. Last season being the first time he played a full 16 games too.

In other news Ryan Fitzpatrick is being backed into a corner quite fast. The Jets offer on the table is for $36m over 3 years with $24m guaranteed. It has $12m in the first year, so they are trying to cover off having to cut him/pay him for his last 2 years.

Fitz has rejected that and countered with a one year, $12m fully guaranteed deal. The problem with this is that the Jets can't accept without cutting someone, but Fitz has nothing to push them into it. No one else is interested in him and they are in no rush to pick him up.

I think we're going to see more of that sort of retirement going forward. From guys who aren't necessarily threatening to win a ring but have made enough money to set themselves up for life, anyway.

It seems a bit bonkers when you think about it but I suppose what's the difference between having 5 and 15 million in your bank account?

The Fitzpatrick think is a bit odd. He must still fancy himself to play for a good 2 or 3 more years. Otherwise why not take the longer contract and then just let the jets cut him and take his guaranteed money (or sit in a backup role like Matt Moore and be comfortable knowing he's getting paid without damaging his health).

Ballsy move for someone who could easily flame out.

Is it just me who can't get my head around that?

24m possibly riding to 36m over 3 years implies that the 24m is guaranteed. Given the 24 is made up of 12 + 6 + 6 he had been offered 12m guaranteed for this year. How can they afford that but can't afford the 12m one year deal?

They can Defer money out to the back end of the deal. So it's probably not an issue this year but a fucking massive one next year.

Some contract news about the league as news has been a little slow lately.

The Broncos talks with Von Miller have stalled days after saying 'real progress' had been made.
Malcolm Butler is on hold out from Patriots practice over wanting a new deal. He earned $500k last year which was a pro bowl year, but stands to make 'only' $600k this year.
Gio Bernard has signed an extension with the Bengals, 3 years and $15.5m.
The Panthers are planning to tie up a lot of their team. They've got Norman off the cap and are looking to front load all of their extensions so that they pay a lot less after this season.

Lastly is Andrew Luck. This season is his 5th year option which will bag him $16m. If they can't do a deal there than franchise tagging him would see him earn $25m in 2017 and then if they tagged him again, he'd earn $35m in 2018. The talk is that there are 2 types of deal being explored. One is a 10 year contract, so he will essentially spend all of his career with the Colts. The other, more realistic one, suggests a 5-6 year deal that would make him the highest paid player in the league, possibly of all time. The current top earner is Joe Flacco who is on about $23m per year, so he's about to get paid.

Sooner or later Denver will just give Miller the money if they can't get him to budge at all.

I've no concerns about it getting done.

MMQB say, via Schefter I think, that the current stall is no longer over the total size of the contract but the guaranteed money.

The people of San Diego have delivered a 110,786 strong signature petition to the City of San Diego. They got that number in 6 weeks.

It gets submitted to a test, which if it passes, I believe entitles the people of San Diego to vote on whether or not the Chargers get their stadium money.

Luck's career would probably be better off if he played out his franchise years until the Colts can't afford him, and then goes to a proper team, but he'd be silly to turn down the guaranteed payday given his injury history recently.

Breshard perriman has buckled his PCL 12 months after doing his ACL.

No luck for the kid - 26th pick in the draft last year and struggling to get on the field.

Oh and it wasn't an ACL last year, it was his PCL in his right knee.

This one is a tear of his ACL in the left knee.

Speaking of knee injuries. One of the Saints only proper pass rushers Hau'oli Kikaha has torn his ACL. He was only drafted last year but that's his 3rd ACL tear already(2 while at college). Probably done for the season.

It was a bit strange that all the media were touting Perriman to instantly come in the team though.

There's no chance that the coaching staff would put him instantly ahead of Kamar Aiken in the depth chart.

It's less of a blow than last year as Aiken came on strong in his first season as a starter. We've also got Steve Smith coming back, the 2 we drafted this year (including Keenan Reynolds), Campanaro is coming back from an injury and looked great at times last year (that rushing TD against the Steelers was fucking brilliant), Mike Wallace (lol), Chris Matthews who went mental a couple years ago in the Super Bowl and a couple of other promising youngsters.

Last year it was so much bleaker.

He was the 30th best in terms of Fantasy points scored last year at WR, abysmal is a bit far.

He started a little slow last year but he was great, 944 yards with 5 TD's is a good return. Especially as he didn't feature that much in the first few games and he had to catch balls from Mallett, Clausen and Schaub who started 6 of our games last year.

As good as he is, that seems far too much.

Especially as he's being shifted to DT as Schwartz is moving them to a 4-3.

Perriman has been lucky. After checking on him they've decided it can be treated with Stem Cells and he should be okay for most if not all of 2016.

Run DMC in Dallas hasn't been so. He broke his elbow trying to dive to save his mobile phone and has had to have surgery.

The other news of the day is Joey Bosa. He still hasn't agreed his contract and is now on a hold out. The dispute comes from him wanted all of his contract money, regardless of if he gets cut or moved on or whatever. Essentially if he becomes a free agent and switches teams, he could end up being paid by two teams at once, should he get what he wants.

We're trying to trade Monroe which makes sense.

He was great when we first signed him but he's on the decline and far too injury prone.

    Stanley-Alex Lewis/John Urschel/Ducasse-Zuttah-Yanda-Wagner should do fine.

Left guard is a bit of a mess with one option being a rookie (who has impressed in training apparently but that means fuck all) and Ducasse being bounced around a few teams. Favourite right now has to be Urschel who has played a few games along the line.

That's what contracts should be, so don't have an issue with that. He's the number 3 pick on a shit team. Particularly given the new rookie wage scale, I don't really get why more of them don't just turn up and say fuck it, I want it all completely guaranteed.

Likely going to the Giants or Seahawks.
