Isn't the more likely explanation of the Ronaldo business that, in knock-out football, you'd probably want Ronaldo on at the end of it all if he has to be, and there's no way that will happen if he starts? That and the fact that his absence massively improves their team.

I've seen a couple of clips that led me to believe otherwise when it comes to the national team. For club football it has been like that for like almost a decade though.
