I'm foreign, but I wish I were an Englishman
If we do have all these available workers who are understandably choosing to take UC ahead of working, yet employers are still desperate for staff, how is unemployment at its lowest level since the 70s?
https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentand...ebruary%201974.
Something doesn't add up there.
If hiring someone at a higher wage was better for a company than not hiring someone at all, then they would just do that, wouldn't they? If roles are unfilled right now, raising the minimum wage will just make companies not bother.
I just don't think government can be very effective at increasing wages. Maybe the kicking the foreigners out would work, who the fuck knows.
Unemployment is at its lowest in god knows how long and no one can pay their bills but the dole is the problem.
Because "employment" is misleading. We didn't have zero hour contracts in the 70's. There are a fuck tonne of people "working" that have no work. There are also a fuck tonne of people working for 3 or 4 different employers to make up full time hours. I'm not sure how that is reflected in the figures, but I imagine it's taken advantage of.
I didn't say that the dole is the problem either, but phonics gonna phonics.
What do you think of this @Lewis?

No one has, his ability to read things that aren't there is outstanding.
A lot of people working for the likes of Uber/Deliveroo and so on will be working as self-employed, too. That's before you even get to the Youtube/Instagram/Twitch/OnlyFans/TikTok personalities.
The only thing I pay for on the interwebs is Gamepass and I should probably cancel it since I never use it.
I would pay for this place.
He didn't answer his own question about the language, which is very important. We were invaded so many times way back when that our language takes all the best concepts from Latin, Germanic, Scandinavian, Celtic etc in a survival of the fittest scenario. The result is that English is far more efficient than other languages as well as being easier to say in the mouth.
In an English cafe the waiter says 'Inside or outside?' while in France one is asked 'Would you like to install yourself at the interior or the exterior?' Add that up for every single interaction in a human life and it becomes much easier speaking English.
Surely a language that takes the best concepts from other languages would pronounce things exactly as they are spelled like Spanish and Italian do.
Nobody should strive to sound like the Italians.
Spelling only comes in much later, which is why the 200 year old Americans (wrongly) think that matching the two has any kind of relevance.
The Liz Truss phone hacking stuff is too far fetched for The Thick of It.
Have they really banked this to save Stella?
Matt Hancock suspended as Tory MP for joining Im a Celeb
Would this trigger a by-election? I can’t imagine the constituency is too thrilled about having no MP for a while.
They have an MP, he just isn't a Tory. Joins the Indepedent naughty list (quite an entertaining cast of characters)
I haven't seen Mick Lynch on any news programmes for quite a while now. Did they just stop getting him on because they got fed up with being made to look like fools?
Surely he's been cancelled or milkshake ducked by now? Support for Russia or historical anti-semitism the lowest hanging fruit normally.
He hasn't. I think there was an attempted cancelling of Eddie Dempsey but it didn't really seem to take off.
He obliterated some MPs at a select committee hearing a few weeks ago but I think the media are dodging him for the reasons you stated.
Indeed. He is a quite excellent public speaker and interviewee and neither the media nor his opponents had any clue how to deal with that.
He has the mildly introverted, zero bullshit approach which is the antithesis of everything that anyone in mainstream politics or the media understands about communication. They only know pre-prepared soundbites, thrusting egotism, and doublespeak. The media training industry must have shat itself during some of his interviews.
His approach was much more common in the 70s and earlier, hopefully he will herald its reintroduction but there's no fraudulent guru money in that so I doubt it.
It's fucking shit though. The most left-wing person I've seen on tv recently (Peston last night and Question Time maybe a couple of weeks ago) has been Jess fucking Phillips.
Union representatives should be on air as much, if not more than, these fucking opaquely funded thinktanks like the IEA.
Also, blow up the bank of England.
Predicting the longest ever recession but also jacking up interest rates at the same time. Cunts.
Why should they have been at 3% last year?
Ideally they'd have been putting them up incrementally since about 2014. Squandering one of the main tools to tackle recessions (cutting interest rates) is completely idiotic.

But then surely you'd have choked off the meagre growth we had throughout the 2010s?
This an energy shock which the right used to their advantage in the 70s with the oil crises and we're seeing it (and falling for it) all over again.
This is the issue and this is why rates should have risen earlier no it wouldn't have controlled all of the inflation but it would have had an impact on inflation whereas it's now 10% it might only have been 6/7% still not great but not as bad as it is and therefore it's then less likely to become embedded in the economy.
