I think most of what is said about the Soviet Union is interchangeable with most of what is said about the British Empire. Good stuff, bad stuff... Possibly in different ratios, depending on what you think the counter-factuals are, but fundamentally the same issue. There is a great twitter experiment to be done by somebody relatively prominent where they praise one of them ('For all of the bad things it did, it also...'), wait for the reactions to roll in, and then correct it to the other one.

I don't know about the best, but I think Terminator 2 might actually be perfect for what it is - There is not a scene or shot in that that's anything but absolutely spot on.

I mean, I've never even seen it to be fair. Maybe it's unexpected genius and the team that made the trailer are just useless.

Seriously. Even the Zelda clones like Darksiders I can't get on with. The 2D ones flow better and don't stop every minute to go, "POINT OF INTEREST! HEY! DIDN'T KING IMPORTANCE SAY HE WAS LOOKING FOR A POINT OF INTEREST? WE SHOULD TAKE THIS BACK TO HIM AND SHOW HIM. THIS POINT OF INTEREST. THAT YOU FOUND. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO REPEAT THAT? IT DEFAULTS TO YES!"

Mario goes to 3D and nails it with some really, really good movement and tempo. Metroid goes to 3D and nails it with some really clever exploration. Zelda just crawls.

I also want to hear what Comrade Boydy's full take on the Soviets is.

Terminator 1 is better, for me. T2 is the same again but more. Kinda think it goes on too long too, although maybe.

In principle, anyway. They've brought in the liquid fella which is nice.

Maybe I've just seen it too many times. I watched it constantly as a kid and could probably write out the whole script from memory if I had playing in mute in front of me.

T2 sets it on a trajectory to shitsville. Terminator 1 is gritty and real. I'll not begrudge some of the cooler performances, though. Robert Patrick and Linda Hamilton are awesome in it. Terminator 2 should've seen John killed by one of them. T3 could be a roided up Sarah Connor out for revenge against both Terminators. And then she wins. And it ends somehow.

Alien 3's not better than Aliens but it is massively underrated.

Terminator 2 is excellent, possibly the film I'd name my favourite depending what mood you caught me in but as soon as it gets made the story for basically all of the films doesn't make a lick of sense any more so while it's awesome it also pretty much guaranteed there wouldn't be a good sequel.

Sadly I didn't realise this before I went to see T3 and the inflating tits at the cinema.

I think the first two still hold up but then it's different watching stuff like that for the first time.

Even ignoring the others as soon as another two robots just get lobbed back through time it's like "Wait, hang on though-" but it's fine, I can make allowances for a classic.

2 makes sense in the context of 1, no?

And either way, 1 itself has a huge paradox in it.

What's the paradox in 1? You mean the causal loop with Kyle being Connor's dad? Id call that a paradox but not a plot hole or anything.

The plot ruining paradox is when they start preventing Judgment Day from ever happening (edit) - but I think it's ok so long as it ends at T2 which leaves it open ended as to whether they prevented anything.

Controversial opinion: I thought Dark Fate was an ok third film and probably the third best terminator film.

I more mean that if they can send back multiples why not just go "Fuck it, let's send three back at once" or one a day for a week or whatever, just something that can't possibly fail.

As discussed though I don't care too much because 1 and 2 are ace.

I haven't seen Dark Fate but it being the third best one would not be very difficult.

I actually genuinely really enjoyed about the first five or ten minutes of Gynysys until fucking dragon woman turned up and it all went downhill from there.

I thought the Genisys bit where they're back in 1984 again was really cool. It all just fell apart before long though.

I think its briefly said that sending things back takes a colossal amount of energy and can't really be done on a repeated/constant basis. Might have been mentioned in the novels, can't remember.

The 'For John' bit was cringe as fuck and they could have hired a more realistic actor as the new saviour, but I thought otherwise it was a good effort at flogging a dead horse.

Loved Mackenzie Davis in it too, she was great, and I thought Arnie's story was interesting.

It was kinda just an update of the second one, mind you. Great fun though.

I am a closet Four Weddings fan, but Notting Hill is dire. Richard Curtis lost his freshness once TB was actually in power and he was all but deputy PM.

Not a fan of four weddings.

Pretty woman, though, is fantastic. Also ghost.

Was expecting Jimmy to jump in with a “baseball is better than football” curveball for the thread.
