Mark Cerny has talked to WIRED about Sony's next gen machine.

- Will have a solid state drive with bandwidth faster than any SSD in any current PC.

- The SSD will transform how quickly data can be streamed and will improve load times massively from current titles.
- The PS5 will support 8K.
- Will also support current PSVR, a future version of which is heavily implied but not yet being revealed.
- Supports ray tracing, which seems to be a big focus of new graphics.
- Jump in audio quality will 'redefine what sound can do in a videogame'. Much bigger than the leap from PS3 to PS4, and is a focus of the machine. Hardware resources being thrown at audio.
- Backwards compatible with PS4 software.
- Not out this year.

Who says it's not? They have more stuff to announce and there's some patents about that suggest the backwards compatibility could go deeper.

I wouldn't be so sure on that. The patents that were filed talk about spoofing the CPU into emulating systems. Do it at that level and then you could theoretically run your own discs. It lets them get one over on Microsoft who presently have to wait for the rights holders to give the green light.

Time will tell. Sony's history of emulating their own systems has been weird, especially across the PS3. The 60GB models used to do all that stuff natively on real hardware but, as time goes on, that becomes more expensive and it's easier to cut costs and attempt a software solution. And now that's the only option with consoles going onto x86 architecture. If PCs are getting to the point where PS3 emulation can be brute forced, how close can Sony get?

PS4 games will run natively and anything further back will run via streaming through the PSNow equivalent that you'll get with an upgraded version of PSPlus. No putting your PS1 games into the slot and it reading.

The subscriptions an added bonus, it's just about saving money on disc reading hardware and running software emulation for 4 different architectures. Much easier to run that low-res shit through the cloud. People will bitch about latency but they charged full price for that Parappa remake that was impossible to play on a modern television so I doubt they care.

Said report also states that Virtual Reality made half as much as total console revenue and mobile made more than PC/Console/VR combined. They're run by Nielsen which for gaming you have to sign up for, the only people signing up for it are super hardcore nerds and it skews their numbers. Take it with a pinch of salt.

PS2 was £299 and sold well at launch
PS3 was £425 and struggled
PS4 was £350.

Analysts have said they imagine it will be £450 but I have a feeling they do the disc version for £400 to try and really capitalise on sales.
