    The Hip Hop Thread

    Back like cooked crack

Been listening to Slime Season pretty solidly past couple of days. Most of the tracks have been out in some form beforehand but still good to get them all properly mixed and in one place. Really have became a massive Thugger fan past 6-12 months.

What has everyone been listening to then?

It's not new, but the remix of Cozz's track 'Knock Tha Hustle' with J Cole is really good.

That's a blast from the past. Old Juelz Santana mixtape?

Anyway, glad we've lived on and made it to the new board. The movement moves on.

    A few new ones recently:

    Guilty Simpson - Detroits Son

More of the same from Guilty really. Solid release. Interesting production.

    Travis Scott - Rodeo

I've always had kind of mixed feelings about this kid but I like this more than I thought I would. Bieber raps on one track on it and actually kind of goes in.

    Scarface - Deeply Rooted

Not top level 'Face but still pretty solid. He's transitioned pretty well into the "grown up Hip Hop" category.

    Jay Rock - 90059

Only just got this the other day so I've only listened to it once but it sounded pretty good. The Black Hippy posse cut is the stand out. A Black Hippy album really needs to happen before the moment passes.

I also agree with AD that the new Lupe mixtape is dope. I'm pretty much a believer at this point, which has surprised me. It's also made me want to go back and listen to Tetsuo and Youth again. That really is a top, top album.

Jay Rock & Mac Miller albums are very good, as is the new Mayday album.

A Drake/Future project is dropping tonight, never really been a huge fan of either but think it'll be worth checking out.

    Who is Bob Sacamano?

Mac Miller's album is good after the first few spins. Not sure it's up there with WMWTSO but we'll see.

K.Dot is apparently releasing something soon as well (probably just a track), and Rashad is dropping an album this year.

Such a great tune. I love Ab-Souls verse.

    "I'm more spiritual than lyrical
    I'm similar to Eli......why?
    'Cause I'm wearing black shades
And I'm headed West with the word of God"

The whole album has been on repeat.

TDE really is the strongest label/group whatever of recent years - they haven't dropped a dud between them.

I'm not CRAZY about this Jay Rock album but still some great stuff on there

I don't know about mad underrated. There just isn't that big a market for him, but he is good. His most recent album wasn't particularly great, but was still good and had some really good songs. Whatever that mixtape before was called was a lot better so I'd start with that.

"Control System" is probably the one you want.

His last record "These Days" got kind of poorly received I think, but I still liked that quite a lot. It was just a bit un-focused. It was still probably my second or third favourite rap release from 2014. 2014 was one of the worst years in recent memory though, so I suppose that isn't saying a great deal.

He's kind of the "hippy" one in Black Hippy I always think. A bit more out there with the lyrics and the concepts.

Jay Rocks album gets a big yawn from me.

Rick Ross and Mac Millers albums have gotten some rotation for me recently. The latter is really, really good but goes on for too long.

Listening to What a Time to be Alive. It's good so far, but it's a cash grab that they threw together and you can tell it was made a bit quick. But it's dope.

Yet to get Jay Rocks album and Rodeo.

Gonna go against the grain now and shit a lil bit on Kendrick Lamar. 80% of to pimp a butterfly is un-listenable to me. Just hope he doesn't go down the Mos Def route.

Kendrick is one of the few saving graces of the genre. So few artists are pushing things forward.

Really enjoyed this. Perfectly encapsulated that Detroit techno sound.

I've been way behind in my new hip hop album listening this year but Gangrene's You Disgust Me is one of my faves of the year. Oh No and Alchemist are untouchable.

Basically. Which tracks are dope stand alone tracks?

King Kunta and The Blacker the Berry are the only amazing tracks to me. The rest is dull and too artistic for my taste. Maybe I'm just a simple minded fool but I don't like the sound at all.

That top 50 album thing was pretty fun, but it's a bit moot to post there as a hiphop head. I'll check your guys lists out if you post them here anyways, pointless reading the others lists.

I haven't kept up to date with them in quite a while, I need to catch up. This "Sprite Corner" shit with all the drips in the background filming with their fucking camera phones (surely they realise the entire thing is being filmed professionally for Youtube?) is annoying me a bit though.

Georgia Anne Muldrow is really talented and, I always think, really overlooked as a producer (she's got a bit of a "female Madlib" thing going on IMO) so I'll definitely check that one out.

I can see they've got a Mannie Fresh one up as well, that could be interesting.

It's generally pretty hit and miss (some people have made some absolutely awful beats on it) but it's always interesting. The Erick Sermon one is the best one I can remember prior to Just Blaze. I've always found him a really interesting guy to watch work though. Incredibly underrated. He actually has a new one out but I haven't heard it yet.

Oh, and "Meow the Jewels" is a now a real thing that's been released. You can get it for free on their website.

    http://www.runthejewels.net

In all honesty it's probably not going to really work is it? Looking at the lineup they've got to work on it it just makes me wish they'd done a legit remix album instead. It was all for a good cause though I suppose.

The cat usually goes mental when it hears other cats on TV and stuff, so I might play it in front of her and see what happens.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the setting. Having each producer go back to their own studio gave a glimpse into their own settings and how they make their own stuff.

Georgia's massively underrated as producer, along with her husband Dudley Perkins. I've always been a fan of that lo-fi/heavily compressed soul loop sound from Madlib and Stones Throw in general.

One of the videos really pissed me off because it was just a dude with his friends getting high and the track he did was terrible. My favourite is Black Milk's but then I'm biased as I'm a huge fan. One of the records he picked up (Herb Alpert's Magic Man) was so beaten up he had to put it in his cupboard and couldn't use it. He looked devastated. Ha!

What did you guys think of The Meth Lab?

Just catching up on it, disappointing so far. Aside from the title track nothing's really grabbed me. Shame as Meth has been brilliant on other peoples' tracks the last however many years.

Yeah, it was better when they went back to the studio. I liked that little glimpse into their working environment as well.

I had no idea Georgia Ann Muldrow and Dudley Perkins were married! I thought they just worked together a lot.

The Black Milk episode is good. You know as soon as he saw Herb Alpert's name he was thinking about the Biggie "Hypnotize" sample that they got from him and hoping for something just as good, no wonder he looked pissed off.

Phat Kat, "Carte Blanche"! I was just listening to that record for the first time in ages the other week and thinking about how underrated it is. I always think it's one of (if not the) most slept on Detroit albums. Excellent line up of producers.

Shit, "In Search of Stoney Jackson" too. Very underrated in the Madlib catalogue. The amount of times I replayed this track when that album dropped:

( @ the Arsenal image on the video, it was the only one I could find.)

    Good list that, Alex.

    Cheers.

My favourite producers make up quite a lot of the list either with solo albums or work with other artists. I decided not to count FlyLo as a hip hop artist for the list as his work has transcended any kind of genre you could put on him.

Anderson .Paak's album/mixtape Venice is really good, if you haven't checked it out. Reminds me of Childish Gambino in a lot of ways.

Guys got any tips for a little newer hip hop that's more melodic, like older 2pac, Fugees and other 90's stuff? You know, maybe a bit of piano or violin or plinky plonky beats like that, and maybe a splash of teary eyes in there? Not really emo stuff, like Drake (though I love Drake), though.

Hard to explain what I mean, but stuff like this, for instance:

Also, why are ALL rappers these days not pronouncing the full words? It's like they never pronounce the last syllable or at least consonant in words.
