    TTH Walk of Shame

After years of disdain for it, recently I've got quite into baseball. The stigma is strong here, but it feels good to come out of the closet.

I've also started buying all my socks from M&S.

Add your own shameful confessions here.

This is only shameful if you're Lewis. I rate the pate.

I enjoy the Bake Off, and I'm definitely happy to admit it. It's great TV. I assumed it would be awful reality shit until I actually watched an episode.

I too have come round to Bake Off. I think it's the lack of 'personal stories', it's just them completing a task and their personalities come through rather than banging on about how hard their life is.

It also helps that that Liam kid might be the most charming 19 year old in existence. Look at me, describing teenagers as charming, I'm so fucking old.

The only bit I ever really cringe at is when they phone their mum at the end to say they won Star Baker. Ugh.

    So much this.

I was a little dubious but they've been great. I also like Noel so much more when he's not trying to be so random.

I'm on the Yan train myself.

As far as shameful confessions go, my history of second hand watching means I know far more about the Kardashians than any man has a right to admit.

Are you sure about that? I've found out that she's married to Matt Laughton. Can't see anything about him being a footballer.

I'm actually a complete sucker for cooking shows (incidentally I don't like baking shows much because I don't like baking much).

Does anyone know any good cooking shows?

My GF watches that baking show. It's pretty decent actually. To keep with the thread's spirit, 'Mel and Sue' (who I'm assuming are the banterlasses on the show) are the kind of people I usually detest, but I actually find them to be alright.

Antique Roadtrip. There was a while there when I would watch it as soon as I got home every day.

Saw part of an episode recently and it's been turned into some kind of vehicle for shit celebrities. Ruined.

I like Bakeoff and Strictly because even though they are all in competition they seem to be nice to each other. Because of that reason I think I'd hate the Apprentice if it used anything resembling competent people.

I like the costume cooking show, Remains of the Tray.

Have watched every episode of strictly now for about 5 years, started as something to watch with my wife and girls as family viewing, now I'm can tell my fleckle from a heel lead, although I am still waiting for Winckleman to make a funny joke.

Yes Jimmy. Are you watching the MLB or what?

Baseball is usually shit, not because it's boring, but because they play about 200 games a year so each individual game has almost zero tension or important. In the playoffs and the World Series it can be riveting, especially last year when the Cubs won.

My immediate thoughts coming into it as an almost newbie this year are:

    - Like you say, they need to halve the number of games and fire most of the relief pitchers. 162 games in 6 months? Really? It must be absolutely brutal and even more so in the minor leagues where they don't get paid anything.
    - Individual stats seem to be treated as far more important than whether the team wins, probably for the above reason, though I don't know whether the chicken or the egg came first. I found that initially hard to compute but once you get used it, it becomes kind of compelling in its own right.
    - It is the most American thing there is, in every respect, good and bad. The thing that strikes me most is that it kind of exists in its own unchanging world which MUST remain constant. Footballers from the 1920s-50s are so impossibly distant to us, but Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio are almost still living and breathing now because they were playing, give or take, exactly the same game and we have all the same stats about them as players are compiling today.
    - It is more like cricket than I first realised and than is first apparent, although cricket has evolved around romance and aesthetics, and baseball has evolved purely around stats. Baseball and cricket can and should both learn a massive amount from each other, but I'm not sure either of them really does.
