The problem with gun control is how many obsessive there are in the gun ‘hobby’. Saw a post on reddit the other day where someone said owning that many guns with that many rounds of ammunition should see you flagged on a register and the overwhelming response was from people saying ‘I own that many guns and rounds of ammunition: should I be on a register?’ With no hint of irony. These people don’t think it is odd behaviour to horde more firepower than your average infantry squad.

In just the last year or so, two of my co-workers teenage children (14 and 19 respectively) have tried to commit suicide and failed (been found after deliberately overdosing in both cases). While it's not impossible to get a gun here in Australia, the vast majority of families don't have or need them. If these kids had access to them and were truly trying to end their lives it would almost certainly be game over.
Obviously in a lot of cases if people want to die they'll find a way. But there's not much coming back from a bullet to the brain.
The main question for Americans has to be why every other western democracy has strict gun control and they do not. I know they're indoctrinated about FREEDOM (whereas we are merely indoctrinated to queue at bus stops) but that alone is not an explanation.
