Right. I like animals too, but I'd rather see a dog run over than a HGV swerve lanes trying to avoid it and cause a multi car pile up killing fuck knows how many people.

HGV drivers shouldn't be swerving to avoid dogs.

Better a dog die than a person. Couldn't be caught and can't be firing shots across a main road so had to be done.

In a black and white world then sure, but reaction can take over in these situations and you'd be braking or swerving before you may even know it was a dog.

I get that, it was more the policeman's wording of "drivers having to swerve" I was taking issue with. I mean, they had a choice in the matter, and flattening it would have solved most people's problems.

I don't see what else could really be done. You're not going to stop traffic for half an hour to sort out one loose pet.

Could they not set up a diversion?

I'm very surprised it was the only safe option.

Not having that. A bunch of people getting impatient is nothing compared to someone / a family losing a loved pet.

How many people do you think it takes to close down a stretch of motorway? It's not about the people waiting, it's that it's a waste of time for emergency service workers who could find they have something more important to attend to.

Don't they have stun guns or something? Running it over seems harsh.

I'd say a good chunk of what policemen do in an average week is more important than attending to pets whose owners haven't looked after them properly.

The only safe option was to run the dog over at sufficient speed to ensure that it was destroyed.

The choice of words there made me lol so much.

At the end of the day though it's better that a dog was killed rather than X amount of people although they could have tried other methods.

You've lolled at that before, but 'destroy' is the standard term for an animal being put down. I think that usage probably predates its more common modern day one.

I have? I highly doubt it.

Even if it is standard, it's brilliant.

That wording does come across as a little brutal and it does seem a slightly extreme solution at first reading. Having said that I don't think I could have come up with a better solution on the spot, plus it's just a dog.

Exactly, maybe they could have with more time but they had to act quickly and it was the best quick response.

-Have someone tell people to slow down.
-Wave a T-bone from the sidelines.
    -Bring pooch back home safe.
-Everyone still makes it back on time for Match of the Day or Eastenders or whatever.

Probably should have killed a motorist to use as bait if no steaks were available. It's a dog after all.

My sis screwed up one of her driving tests because she swerved to avoid a dog. If a dog's going to just run forever like an unstoppable force, run the cunt down.

People shouldn't swerve at high speed to avoid a dog, but the instinctive reaction for many will be to do just that. Ergo if they've tried to 'secure' the dog and been unsuccessful, and it's presenting a genuine risk of a serious accident, then there's nothing else you can do. You can't have the emergency services closing part of the motorway and committed needed manpower for the sake of a dog.

If the dog's going around biting people who try to grab hold of it, then it probably needs splatting. It's a lot more sensible than getting the North Wales firearms squad in (I'm sure they are a crack team) to have a potshot at a fast-moving canine as it darts in and out of moving traffic, and also more humane.

If there's any risk whatsoever to human life by trying to keep the dog alive then you kill the dog.

    It's a fucking dog.

You'd think that they should have been able to tranquilize it somehow - an officer was trying to "take hold" of the thing after all - but, assuming they couldn't (I doubt many cops are armed with tranquilizer guns) then they did the right thing.

Not just police, either. North Wales police. Look at that town name. It's probably like the police station in Hot Fuzz.

Sheep wouldn't do any more damage than an average sized dog.

Although that doesn't mean they wouldn't do any damage. Especially if you hit two of them.
