That's not a defense against violating your own internal logic and constantly breaking rules the moment they're established. It's a fucking mess, even by the standards of superhero films.

It's largely to do with the atmospheres and why Superman is strong.

In the preamble Russell Crowe says that Kal-El will be stronger because he'll have grown up with the extra nourishment of earth's atmosphere and our younger sun. This is promptly rubbished when the goon platoon turn up and are immediately as strong as him, despite having never been to earth before, and wearing suits at all times which shield them from both our atmosphere and our sun.

When Superman boards the spaceship he starts coughing up blood because of the different oxygen composition in their atmosphere, and when he gets close to that bastard machine he begins to lose his strength, yet he has no problem breathing in space.

A great performance by the kid, but I felt the film was missing something. The first chapter should have been a little shorter (though it dragging did help to set the scene), and the second half should have focused more on his mum. The final scene was quality, though.

All the Star Wars shit over the last few days put me in the mood to watch the original for the first time in years. I knew going in the effects were shoddy and there was some laughable model work involved, but what the fuck were they up to with this.
