Watched chocolat about a week ago, don't think I posted in here. It was not great. Odd seeing a very young Johnny depp.

Depp has been in some absolute bilge, I bet he looks at Di Caprio and thinks what might have been.

Based on the emails that came out when he was skint recently he's drifted so far away from anything which could be even charitably described as reality that I doubt he even sees other humans any more.

Leonardo DiCaprio is being touted for this Joker origin film, so he could still plummet past him.

I discovered today that filming has finally started on The Irishman. I don't think I've ever been so excited about a film in my life. I remember first hearing about this years ago and assumed it would never happen.

Finally got around to watching Icarus, the Russian doping documentary Netflix have been doing their best to hide, and fuck me. I don't think I've ever watched a documentary where someone has stumbled so arse backwards into such a massive story, and I'd struggle to think of one with the same access to its subject that wasn't completely sycophantic. It's just a shame the whole thing was the result of a non-documentarian trying his hand at it, so it's pretty poorly constructed. In the hands of someone who really knew what they were doing that would have been something special. It's still brilliant, but that's just because the bloke had the good fortune to have struck up a relationship with the mastermind of the entire Russian doping system a few months before anyone else knew his name, that man is somehow very likeable and the story that develops is so intriguing.

I think @Reg took an interest when I mentioned it before, did you watch it?

Yes, it's quite something. And as you say quite a freakin' strike of luck for a filmmaker. I thought the camera shots, use of music and editing such as the montages of news reports all made it seem like it was a work of fiction. Which was a bit odd, and I sometimes had to remind myself that everything actually happened. And I agree - you can't help but like Rodchenkov and the two of them seemed to really care about each other.

What would you change about the way it was constructed?

They had the guy who made it on talkSport a while back and yeah it's pretty phenomenal how it all unfolded. I've not watched it but definitely plan on doing.

The first forty minutes, which essentially represent the documentary he was making in the first place, play like an extended meet cute in the context of the rest of it, so I'd cut that in half. There's no need for so many shots of him actually injecting himself in the arse and cleaning the blood up. Keep in the good stuff with Rodchenkov delightedly advising him how to get around the doping controls, particularly him just gleefully smuggling piss through airport security, and enough of the rest to give it some context, get rid of Fogel sitting on shop floors and sweating his way up a French hill. And while the 1984 parallels added a nice structure to the final third of the film, there's absolutely no need to have Rodchenkov himself reading aloud from three different copies of the book. That's just pure artifice and added quite heavily to the already present feeling that it was all a slightly overwrought thriller.

Wind River is decent, though I'm not sure if I agree with some of what it's getting at.
There seems to be a lot of stuff worth watching that's out at the moment, I notice.

Not watched much film recently man. Contratiempo is the closest of late but its just a very solid twisty thriller. The Invitation if you haven't seen it (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2400463/), or Raw which is the best film of the year so far.

Ha. I heard Robbie Collins reviewing that a while back and it sounds like a tough watch. I 'd like to read the book first anyway.

Is this the Contratiempo you mean? Not the 2011 one, right?

Yeah, they're all great. I think I probably enjoyed the second one the best, but the third was probably the "better" film. And fucking depressing.

You'd swear it was a couple of grand for a ticket. Who cares if some people like it and some people don't, you'll always get that. If you're interested in seeing it just go and see it.

My parents went to watch it but said they didn’t understand what actually happened. My dads main gripe was “why did they keep letting people in? Or why didn’t they ask them to leave?” which, despite only knowing what he’s told me, seems like a decent argument.

I remember a lad that I used to play in the band with used to go on about it all the time, especially when we were stoned. It seemed to have a massive effect on him but always sounded too weird for me.
