The Circle got bad reviews. It wasn't that bad, and it's targets - IT companies that are becoming a lot like cults, and the effects that social media has on privacy - are well chosen. But the writing is uneven.

I've watched Rush and Brewster's Millions today, both of which are still excellent.

    Darkest Hour is crap.

Having been captivated for nearly an hour the film completely runs out of steam and goes down a path in an attempt to reinvigorate itself that wasn't just shit, but actually embarrassing.

How does that get through quality control? What the fuck was Joe Wright thinking?

On the plus side, Gary Oldman is excellent.

I thought it was on the same path from the start. If you think it a crap path then fine, but I think it was honest about what it was doing.

Had it been half an hour shorter I'd have probably thought 'good film'. But there wasn't enough made of the material to stretch it to a 2hr+ running time and I can honestly say that the underground part is one of the worst scenes (in an otherwise not terrible movie) that I can recall.

I'm still staggered by it now.

I thought it worked (though I realise I'm in the minority) as a fever dream style metaphor scene, of which there were several during the film. It was possibly a bit clumsy in the execution I guess.

Just seen an advert for Ready Player One, the new Spielberg thing. It's the FPS bit from Wreck It Ralph stretched to feature length.

Yep, no problem with dramatic license being used, but for me that scene was done so badly, with the token black man topping it off.

    That simply can't be good.

We saw black panther. It was pretty good but - and I'm not sure how I can justify this - it felt mental even for a Marvel film.

I watched The 13th yesterday on Netflix which was a bit of a serious effort. Interesting documentary, even if it did paint a pretty horrid picture of American society.

On the plus side, it made Donald Trump look terrible at the end.

Finally took the plunge and watched Suicide Squad, christ it's shit. Felt like they could have actually done something good with it too but they fucked it right up.

DC are pretty fucking bad at making films. Outside of the Nolan Batman's, Watchmen, V for Vendetta and Wonder Woman there's not many other good films but plenty of absolute shit.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was really bad, probably one of the laziest sequels I can recall. Stronger was good and offered an interesting insight into a victim's perspective of just how helpful all of the social media wank is when you've just lost both your legs above the knee.

Another bad film in Bright today although it's nowhere near as bad as critics were making out and I enjoyed it more than Suicide Squad. It's pretty much instantly forgettable though.

Finally saw Limitless after hearing people rave about it forever.

It's pulp, and it's shit. The main character being the narrator is a lazy device, starting the film off with a cliffhanger is a contrived technique, and the perspective zooms were sickening to watch. Most egregious of all is that it pulled the "you only use 10% of your brain" bullshit. Our brain is fully active almost 100% of the time. If you're producing/directing/writing and you leave that shit in there, then it means you're a moron and your movie is going to be dumb.

The only book/movie that pulled off the whole "10% of your brain" shit was Matilda by Roald Dahl, and obviously that's an exception.

I only realised in the last year or so that every time someone mentioned Bradley Cooper I was actually thinking of Bradley Whitford. 'Bradley Cooper? Yeah, he was great in West Wing'

Lady Bird is good. Don't know if it merits the "universal acclaim" that it has recieved.

Universal acclaim doesn't mean everyone has praised everything about it, just that everyone has praised it to some degree.

If you've taken it from Rottentomatoes, which is where that phrase is really used, then all it means is no negative reviews.

I really liked The Shape of Water. I bet Michael Shannon would have been the biggest actor around fifty years ago, the over-acting nonce.

Watched that Three Billboards film tonight and thought it was very good, but all the wankers in the theater laughing out loud throughout as if they were watching Ace Ventura in that very American 'look at me, look at me' way ruined the whole thing.

Lady Bird is best viewed if you pay attention to the contrast between how her mother treats her daughter compared to other people. This is pretty obvious advice, sure, but I think you can miss the core of the film if you gloss over those parts when the mom's not around her daughter.

It's fine. It has some funny moments, and the family dynamics are well done.

I really enjoyed Shape of Water. I haven't seen Three Billboards, but it seems liked a reasonable Best Picture winner.

Hawkins was excellent, as was whoever did the fish suit.

Watched I, Tonya last night, which was pretty good, if a little off in places.

One thing that was constantly on my mind was whether the news correspondent was a white actor blacked up or not.

I enjoyed it but it was deeply silly in places. The news man was Bobby Cannavale with a heavy fake tan, so you're half right.
