Have I misunderstood this phrase?
I've always taken as meaning being nervous and moving around a lot in your seat at the footy - creating a squeak on the plastic chairs... but these journo's seem to think it's farting from holding in a nerve-induced shit.

I've never given it much (read: any) thought.
I always thought it was coined by Sir Alex Ferguson and therefore was Glaswegian and therefore by definition involved a needless reference to sex or poo, in this case poo.

I've never really given it much thought but if pushed I think I would have gone along the nerve induced sweaty arse crack line of thought, if that is an available option.
