    England women's football furore

Can someone explain to me exactly what is going on here?

Eni Aluko accused the manager of being racist and a bully, he denied it and was cleared, then the FA paid her hush money, then the FA denied it was hush money. Then England played yesterday, someone scored a goal and steamed over to the manager in support of him. Next thing that happens Eni Aluko is putting out bizarre tweets and the manager is about to resign.

What is going on, and who's driving the boat?

What's going on is that your First Rule of Refereeing should actually be the First Rule of Officialdom.

I thought it got reopened again because the manager contradicted himself after the initial investigation. I'd err on Eni's side though given all that I have read.

    It is a bit odd.

Apples was a very nice lad and women's football is a lot bigger in Australia than most places.

So you can see how people get into it; but aiming to do so is like growing up wanting to play non-league football.

We might have no choice in a few years when the TV channels are forced to balance up the coverage of men's and women's. If we'll even be allowed call them men and women by that stage.

If he had had some weird idea[s] about their version being better or whatever, and preferred watching it for some reason, then fair enough. But no. He just wanted to coach women because of what I suspect were weirdo reasons.

    Weirdo reasons are a given.

If you're going to follow a women's sport, it is hard to look past volleyball.

    Hey, speaking of suspect motivations:

Members of Manchester United’s famous “class of 92” have unveiled plans to open a university that will teach students how to understand finance, cope under pressure and “maintain a healthy body and mind”. University Academy 92, or UA92, the brainchild of Gary Neville and former teammates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, will open in Trafford in September 2019. The institution, which is backed by Lancaster University and Trafford council, aims to attract students who otherwise might not go on to higher education. It plans to offer “broader courses than traditional degrees, designed to enhance life skills as well as employability”.
Some belting Gary Neville bullshit under that as well. Twat.

It's not a 'trade school'. It's Gary Neville teaching rubes 'leadership and presentational skills'.

This literally sounds like it's from a trade school pamphlet but I guess they don't outright say "electrical/plumbing/etc".

The longer this stuff goes on the more I think Paul Scholes will become the main villain. Nicky Butt (the club should step in there) and 'Fizzer' just want to be involved, Neville is a gobshite, and Ryan Giggs appears to be finding retirement difficult; but Scholes was always meant to be private and sensible, so him hovering around is the conclusive proof (if you still needed any) of it being a seedy cash-in.

Hold on though. I just heard the row was started because something like:

Player: "My family are coming over to see the game!"
Manager: "LOL hope they don't bring ebola with them!"
    Player: "You wat m8"
    Manager: *bad poker face*

Right, I've just been listening to Martin Glen on the radio (and somehow managed not to plough into a bus queue).

They investigated Sampson after the bullying and racism claims and cleared him of any wrongdoing. During that process it was brought to their attention that he was investigated while running the Bristol academy and while that concluded he was ok to be a football coach (they skirted around what had gone on but with the language used I'm guessing he was knobbing one of his players) but having read the report in full Glen decided he wasn't up to the higher standard that the FA holds itself to so decided to sack him.

After you've finished lolling at that last part you have to wonder how this wasn't brought to light when they gave him the job, the obvious answer being that it was and everyone thought it probably wouldn't ever be widely reported. With the extra scrutiny on Sampson at the moment it can only have been a matter of time before this other incident was dug up so the FA have sacked him before anything that made them look bad was splashed all over the front pages.

In short, arse covering all round.

Unless the person at the centre of this Bristol thing was twelve, it sounds like a bollocks excuse to sack him and appease the people who insist that he's a racist.

It effectively makes their disciplinary (and other) procedures worthless if they 1) refuse to stand by them; and 2) will then inevitably BOTTLE IT and seek to undermine themselves if the right people moan in the right way.

Sounds like the current episode was not going away so they went back to find something they could get rid of him for and went "oh that thing we thought was fine two years ago, let's do him for that. Sorted."

It's quite sinister how these things work. I mean I'm sure having a woman would be great, but why does the 'pressure campaign' need to start.
