The Sunderland thread, sponsored by not being capable of keeping a manager

For a whole season, or in some cases, the first few months.

Listed in the poll are the names being bandied around (some by rather optimistic Sunderland fans) as the next potential lamb to the slaughter. Why any of them would bother I do not know.

Whether our Director of Football remains nobody knows.

I struggle to think of a team who've spent as much time in the top flight since football began (in 1992) as Sunderland, who've made less of an impact.

I suppose there was the Kevin Phillips season, but other than that? Nope, I've got nothing.

Consecutive seventh place finishes in that period Yev, I'll have you know.

Up until 2005/06 we were very much a/the yo-yo team, so we never really had much of an impact. Since then we've had nine consecutive years in the top flight (time flies etc.) and yes, we've still managed to do fuck all.

It's quite remarkable really. You should be given some sort of award for invisible longevity.

As for your next manager, if it's Big Sam, what's the point?

The point is he's the most obvious candidate to lead us into another season of nothingness.

Which is all we can hope for.

What's the point in anyone below 8th playing another game?

There probably isn't really and it won't be much longer before that extends to those above 8th.

One could argue it's at that stage already.

Yeah, it probably is. I was reminded when discussing Clough in the other thread that while what he did was remarkable it simply couldn't happen in today's game, and that's more than a bit rubbish.

Sometimes I think Harvey thinks the entirety of football is pointless.

    Gotta be Big Sam, shirley.

It absolutely has to be Sam if they are just looking for survival and subsequent mid table mediocrity.

Just watch out for Kevin Nolan showing up as well.

Fucking hell. I'll back any Big Sam team to stay up, but Sunderland desperately need relegating. What do I do?

Big Sam to keep Sunderland up and then move into the England job after Hodgson fails again in 2016.

    That's a cracking appointment. I didn't think he'd take it if offered.

I would love him as England manager, @Gray Fox. Imagine him Allardici-ing Germany, Italy and the like.

For fuck's sake I want them to go down. Agree on Allardyce for England, it would be great fun.

Surprised he's taken it. Difficult job and I'd have thought he would have wanted something a little safer.

Still, Sam Welby, get the gif.

I like Advocaat, but he's come out with some strange comments since leaving.

Yes the boss has been tight with finances, but why compare us to Man United and Chelsea, or even Spurs?

Palace were in a more hopeless position when Pulis took them over.
